Bursa, Kestel, Gürbüz Family Permaculture Design Project

Bursa, Kestel,

We are carrying out the project in Bursa/Kestel on 19 decares of land belonging to the Gürbüz family.

A large part of the land is reserved for walnut trees. There are some fruit trees in certain regions.

What the family wants from us:

  • To create a sustainable living space for the family that is as self-sufficient as possible.

  • Saving approximately 300 walnut saplings that were planted 3 years ago and did not develop at all

  • To work to make the best use of land and soil

  • To produce agroecological food for the family as much as possible and in all seasons.

  • Reorganization and improvement of the family life center environment

​Discovery, Observation, Information Gathering:

  • The project area is 32 decares in total, located in İnebeyli Village and approximately 12 km away from Karamürsel.

  • The distance to the city center is 45 kilometers

  • South facing. An area of land borders the microclimate zone.

  • The project area is close to the village.

  • Its altitude above sea level is 170 m.

Land Survey and Analyzes:

  • In the first stage, information about Karamürsel/İnebeyli, where the land is located, was collected.

  • Chats were held with local people and agricultural activities carried out in the past were discussed.

  • The land was observed on site in an area of 32 decares and the soil structure was examined.

  • The soil structures of areas close to the land were examined. Exploration was made in nearby forest areas, which are microclimate zones.

  • Information about the vegetation of the land and its surroundings and local plant species was collected.

  • By using drone flight and technological infrastructure, a 3D model of the land was obtained and analyzes were made through programs.

  • The results of the soil analysis were evaluated.

3D Model of the Project Area:

A 3D digital model of the land was obtained on our computer software using approximately 270 photographs collected as a result of UAV flights.

This model is a record of the data of the land surface at that date and enabled us to make various examinations and measurements such as distance and surface area without having to go back to the project area we designed.

In the image below, we measure the crown height of a tree from ground level. In this way, in the final design, this pine tree can be positioned accurately on the designed model with the correct crown width and crown height.

Climate Data

All the information obtained in the past period of Altınordu district, Ordu

The data was meticulously researched and all variables were calculated.

In the model created, activities such as the location of the buildings, planting and revitalizing the soil were shaped by taking into account the data obtained.

Land Topography

The lowest and highest elevations of the land have been removed. In this way, slope analysis was performed.

District Layout:

At the core of the district design, the components and functions of the design are positioned correctly on the land to minimize the energy consumed.

Earthworks , Access and Terraces

Flat areas have been created through soil excavation and filling works in daily activity, ecotourism and family living areas.

Planting:

Existing trees within the land were first placed into the model. Then the plant types planned to be planted were placed:

  • At the request of the family, the land was filled with as many types of plants as possible.

  • A 'food forest' design was carried out on terraces and ditches/mounds created on land contour lines.

  • Plant species that could thrive in alkaline soil were researched and selected.

Food Forest

By creating bumps on the isosurface curves in the empty area between the guard house and the workshop and greenhouse area (hügelculture work can also be done); Planting was carried out on these mounds to form a food forest.

Rainwater Harvesting

With the mounds created on the land surface curves, rainwater is prevented from flowing down the slope of the land and as much water as possible is absorbed into the soil.

Building roof water is also directed to these underground water tanks and ponds. Ponds are also used to create beautiful landscaping and microclimate zones. Roof water of buildings can also be stored in small ponds in front of buildings.

Family Living Area and Surroundings

It will be possible to block the cold winds in winter and create a microclimate zone with evergreen coniferous trees around the northern mound:

Buildings:

In order to guide the preliminary project work, the preliminary concept design of the house and guest houses where the family will live was carried out by our architects. It was seen how much area/volume it would take when placed on the land and how it could be settled.

Workshop and Greenhouse

There are 2 greenhouses, a workshop building and a large terrace in this area.

Ecotourism Region

This area, located on the edge of the natural forest area in the west of the land, was isolated from other areas with coniferous trees and a natural, pleasant area was created for the guests.

Guard house and Product Sales Area

In this area in the north-west of the land, agroecological plant food production will be carried out with deep and high plant beds around the guard house. Building roof water will be collected in the underground water tank and the excess in the pond. Since the goat barn and chicken house are also in this area, they will be under the control of the guard and his family.
