Şile, Hasanlı Permaculture Project

We realised our project on 3 acres of land belonging to the Köseoğlu family in Hasanlı village of Şile. Based on permaculture design roadmap and principles, we started our work by aiming to create an agriculturally sustainable, fertile way of life with diversity, balance and resistance as in natural ecosystems.

As a result of our meetings with the Köseoğlu family, we shaped our project by listening to their dreams and wishes.

What the family wants from us;

  • A house with 4 bedrooms and a large kitchen for the family in about 3 acres of land,

  • 3 guest rooms or living units available for rent with AirBNB

  • A social place for brunch on weekends

  • Food forest, food gardens

Exploration, Observation, Information Collection:

  • The proximity to Istanbul, the richness of cultural assets, the presence of many historical buildings to be seen and visited have revealed the importance of Şile in terms of tourism.

  • It is 25 km to Şile and 50 km to Gebze.

  • Festivals and festivals held throughout the year are an important source of income in terms of tourism.

  • All kinds of vegetables are grown in Şile. It was interviewed that the yield obtained from quince as fruit is at the forefront.

  • The village population is 250 people.

  • In Hasanlı, villagers grow cereals such as barley, wheat and vegetables such as bush beans, black cabbage, corn and hazelnuts and earn income from these products.

  • Some of the villagers are also engaged in beekeeping and animal husbandry.

  • Places to see close to the village: Sarıkavak castle, Sarıkavak water mill, Pharaoh Valley, Akçakese Beach, Değirmençayırı Waterfall, Darlık Dam Lake, Şile Earth Market.

Land Investigation and Analyses:

  • In the first stage, information about the region where the land is located was collected.

  • 3 acres of land was observed on site, soil structure was examined, samples were taken and necessary laboratory tests were carried out.

  • Information on the vegetation and local plant species of the land and its surroundings was collected.

  • With the use of drone flight and technological infrastructure, a 3D model of the land was obtained and analyses were made through programs.

(For more detailed information about the technological infrastructure and approach we use when designing healthy living spaces, see the HHW Roadmap.

3D Model of the Project Area:

A 3D digital model of the land was obtained on our computer software using approximately 170 photographs collected as a result of UAV flights.

This model is a record of the data of the land surface at that date and enabled us to make various examinations and measurements such as distance and surface area without having to go back to the project area we designed.

Climate Data

In order to realize an accurate design, the current and past climate data of the region were meticulously researched.

  • Heat

  • Precipitation

  • Moisture

  • Wind Zone

  • like sun slice

The design was shaped as a result of the data obtained on the above-mentioned parameters and our analysis.

To give an example, sun zones are taken into consideration when planting plants and positioning structures.

Landscape:

After the 3D model we obtained was transferred to a different computer software, the isosurface curves of the project area were determined.

District Layout:

First, the house where the family would live was placed in the most suitable location on the land. This is zone zero. Then, other areas were determined according to work frequency.

Planting:

In the first stage, the locations of the existing trees in the project area were determined through the 3D model, and then the size and volume of the trees were measured.

As a result of the data obtained from soil analyzes and other information, the project area was planted.

Trees and Plants We Added

Available Trees

Existing Trees and New Plants

Buildings:

In order to guide the preliminary project work, the preliminary concept design of the house and guest houses where the family will live was carried out by our architects. It was seen how much area/volume it would take when placed on the land and how it could be settled.

3D Design Model

With the completion of the design of the project, a 3D animation model of the area we were working on was made in another software.

In this way, the final version of the project design was presented to the Serdaroğlu family and approval was received for the project report.

Project General Report

A detailed report describing all stages from the beginning to the end of the design project was created and the project was delivered with the approval of the Köseoğlu family.

The design project we made for the Köseoğlu family for their land in the Şile/Hasanlı region will continue with the next stage, the Preliminary Project.
