Ecoparks

Small Ecoparks in the City

Vision

  • Spreading sustainable life to large masses: by showing that it is possible with examples, by encouraging it, by showing a road map to those who intend to transform, and by involving them in the transformation.

  • A place for people to meet, socialize, rest, eat and drink, experience activities and sustainable living solutions.

scalable

It can be scaled according to different site sizes and budgets, from a community garden on a few hundred square meters of land to a small ecopark on a few acres.

Community Garden

These are eco-settlements where many more examples and applications are carried out in larger areas.

All the works described on the small ecopark page in the city are also valid here, only it will be larger in scale: larger ecocafe, square, bench areas, training areas...

Ecoparks are areas where examples of transformation to sustainable living are shown, applications and research are carried out, training is given and various activities can be carried out. Social transformation can also be accelerated by locating such ecoparks in every city and town and spreading throughout the country - they can play very critical roles in this regard.

Land, Soil, Water, Field, Garden, Forest

There is more to show that can be applied across the vast landscape. The first tasks are revitalization of the soil and water collection. Terraces, ditches, roads, paths, ponds and tanks are designed - to capture the water falling on the land and store it in the soil, tanks, ponds.

The more water that can be retained, the more diversity and abundance will increase. Ponds that collect water can serve a variety of purposes:

  • Irrigation in dry times

  • Aquaculture cultivation: freshwater fish, crayfish, shrimp, aquatic plants: taro, watercress, water chestnut...

  • Ducks and geese: they live in shelters built on the pond, they fertilize the pond - thus accelerating the growth of algae in the pond, and algae are food for fish. Thus, a natural cycle is established.

  • Energy generation: electricity can be generated when transferring water from the upper pond to the lower pond

  • Recreation: water sports, swimming, walking around, rest areas

Once areas where water can be retained are designed, plants with high water needs can be grown close to these areas. When the land is large, natural agricultural diversity can be demonstrated: grains, various vegetables and fruits can be grown. Medicinal herb gardens can be established. There are areas where intensive gardening is done. It is possible to care for small/cattle animals in pastures.

Food forest design can be done on terraces and around ditches: instead of single type of trees, plant species are selected taking into account biodiversity, support and benefit. In addition to pioneer legume trees that can naturally fertilize the soil, towering forest trees, low/dwarf fruit trees, nut trees, climbing vines such as grapes, kiwis and blackberries, and clover-type legume grasses that cover and naturally fertilize the soil are all designed together. Designs and applications can be made that will provide more products with less maintenance. By showing the abundance of the food forest, the spread of such practices in rural areas can be pioneered.

The importance and abundance of natural and biodiverse forests can be both shown and explained. Against the negative evidence that drought and desertification will increase rapidly in the near future of our country, the most effective studies that can be done are afforestation studies that can provide multiple benefits of this kind. Ecoparks can perform very valuable tasks in this field.

Buildings, Works, Activities

As the area grows, production will also increase. It may be necessary to establish more comprehensive production sites and workshops to process the products and transform them into value-added products. Dairy product processing, holding rooms, canning etc., fruit and vegetable drying rooms can be considered. Natural plant medicines, compost fertilizer, liquid fertilizers, effective micro organisms, vermicompost worms production areas can be designed. Wood and metal processing workshops can be established.

A multifunctional square can be designed. Larger activities can be organized in the community garden square. It is possible for much larger numbers of people to come together. Festivals and concerts can be organized.

A cafeteria can be designed that can serve meals to a larger number of people and also be used in production and training.

There may be accommodation units and guesthouses within the ecopark. Visitors from both local, domestic and abroad are constantly requested. There is also a 'volunteer' system in ecological campuses - people come to the eco-campus voluntarily to gain knowledge and experience and offer their labor and knowledge without asking for a fee. The shelter and nutrition of the volunteers are covered by the ecopark management.

Explaining the importance of nature and sustainable life, especially to young people, may be among the priorities. Schools can visit the ecovillage and stay for a few days to gain knowledge and experience by taking part in various activities. This requires guesthouse structures. Children and youth camps can be organized in the summer.

Different gardens can be designed for different purposes and needs. Different garden designs can be made for activity-oriented gardens for children, gardens for the disabled, gardens for the elderly, patients or those in mourning. Thanks to the diversity in the ecopark, areas that can appeal to almost everyone can be created.

Continuing education, meetings/seminars/conferences and activities can be organized in the ecopark. Halls, classrooms and exhibition areas can be designed for this purpose.

An exhibition area or museum promoting the ecopark can also be designed.

It would be beneficial to have boards and signs explaining all the components and functions in the ecopark. Clean energy production, different natural structures and their functions, recycling systems, operations, etc. are explained.

Ecopark projects are very valuable as social service projects that can be adopted and supported by local governments or people with land and financial power who want to do charity work. It provides unifying and healing benefits in common values. While it supports the survival and development of rural people, it also provides many benefits for urban residents, from access to clean food to being a place of rest and activity to relieve stress.
